The United City of Yorkville is a mayor-council form of government and utilizes an appointed city administrator who is responsible for day-to-day operations. The city is comprised of four separate wards. Each ward is represented by two elected aldermen. Yorkville is a non-rule community. In addition to a mayor, and eight aldermen, the city is represented by an elected city treasurer and clerk.

The United City of Yorkville is proud of its Police Department which strives to work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, assist neighborhoods with solving problems and enhance the quality of life in Yorkville. Community-friendly and ever persistent, Yorkville’s police department works on behalf of the community to prevent crime and provide a variety of community programs such as the Citizens Police Academy, Crimestoppers, Child Safety Seat Inspections, Reverse 911, Well-Being Check, Neighborhood Watch, Vacation Watch, the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and the Medical Disposal Program, one of the first in the state.

Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District (BKFPD)

The Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District (BKFPD) provides Yorkville residents with fire protection. Mostly staffed by volunteers, the BKFPD is comprised by six career firefighters and is staffed by 47 per call firefighters. The BKFPD also provides the Yorkville community with a host of additional services including code enforcement, public education and prevention programs, fire suppression, hazardous materials response and paramedic services.

The Yorkville Public Library encompasses 40,000 square feet and is adjacent to City Hall. Since the 2006 opening of the library's new addition, the library staff and board has made strides to increase services and additions to its many shelves. From its music CD collection, new databases—Ancestry and Gale Reference gold, to its many book clubs, and children’s reading and interactive programs, there’s never a dull moment at the library!
